Bosch 800 Series Panel-Ready Dishwasher – SHVM78Z53N Review

The SHVM78Z53N is one of the most popular dishwashers to place your custom panels on.

In this review you’ll learn the best features and a few problems with the SHVM78Z53N, as well as comparison to other paneled dishwashers from KitchenAid, Miele, and Beko.

As you’re reading this, buying a paneled dishwasher from Bosch or any other brand will be difficult, so we want to provide you with multiple options.

Let’s start by reviewing the Bosch.

    Best Features

The dishwasher is quite at 42 decibels. You won’t hear it even if the kitchen is open to the living area.

Most premium brands are at or below the 44 decibel threshold for quietness.

It’s also well priced, ranging from $1,299 to $1,399, so it’s average for what you’ll be looking for in other brands.

Looking at racks, Bosch is pretty flexible. The SHVM78Z53N features Bosch’s new larger MyWay third rack, which is big enough to hold cereal bowls and larger utensils.

It also features it’s Rackmatic adjustable second rack to hold larger items on the bottom or top, depending on how you adjust it.

Bosch’s wash system is decent, but only features two spray arms and a sprinkler head. Most premium brands have three spray arms or even four levels of wash action in the KitchenAid.

Bosch, however, still does a decent job of washing dishes.

The SHVM78Z53N does have the PrecisionWash, which enables the sensors within the dishwasher to continually scan and check the progress of dishes throughout the cycle and adjust accordingly.

Like all Bosches, this dishwasher has plenty of cycles to wash your dishes.

However, drying is perhaps Bosch’s best feature. The SHVM78Z53N uses CrystalDry, which utilizes Zeolite, a volcanic element, to help dry even less dense items like plastics by absorbing moisture and emitting heat.

Sounds gimmicky, but it really works, making it the best drying system on the market.

    Problem

Most brands have availability issues, and we’ll have problems until next year and perhaps beyond.

Bosch is no exception to this issue. May end up waiting six to eight months for your new dishwasher, so be sure to plan ahead if you want to buy a Bosch or any other brand soon.

    Reliability

Bosch had an off year after being one of the most reliable for the previous five.

It now has a 12.8% reliability rating versus KitchenAid at 11%, Miele at 8.2% and Beko at 7.7% based on 37,000 service calls to a service department logged last year.

It’s still a good reliability rate for a high end dishwasher, especially with the new CrystalDry. But Bosch should improve in the future.

    Competition

Bosch, Miele and Beko all fit within a 24 inch depth, so they look like a cabinet.

KitchenAid will protrude, so it looks like a dishwasher with the panel stuck on it.

I like the product, but would advise against buying the KitchenAid if you want to panel your dishwasher.

Miele has their new 500 series dishwashers at the same price. It has decent cycles and three full spray arms.

The clean air drying system allows outside air inside the dishwasher. The hot air is attracted to the cooler side and dissipated as water.

Boscch is technically but not discerningly quieter. It has more cycles and the best drying. Between Mila and Bosch, depends on what you prefer, but also what is available, which leaves us with the most available brand, which is Beko.

For starters Beko has some really interesting features, including a pretty robust wash system with every conceivable cycle, including a separate spray called the AquaFlex and separate cycle called AquaIntense diverting most of the water to the bottom spray to scour the dishes on your bottom rack.

It’s also the quietest dishwasher at 39 decibels, and is even Wi-Fi enabled to be controlled on your phone.

It does have an okay drying system using condensation or heat from the wash combined with JetDry, or other fishing rinses, and time.

Regardless, Bosch has the best dry with CrystalDry and is the more familiar brand, which is important if you’re buying from a store without service.

However, Beko is a pretty interesting and available alternative.

    Should You Buy SHVM78Z53N?

The Bosch SHVM78Z53N is a great dishwasher with good washing, drying and racking. However, there are plenty of other options from other brands. You may end up having to buy what is available. Just make sure it can be serviced in your area.
